Above we have a simple trend graph displaying population decline from the early 19th century to the present day. The highest figure was 3,975 in 1841 prior to the Famine. The next census was in 1851 and the population had dropped to 2,181, nearly 50% of a decline. At the turn of the century it was less than the thousand mark. In 1991 it was 565, approximately 1/7 of the population of 1841. Currently it stands around the 550 mark.
This reflects changing times and the pattern of rural depopulation across the country. In recent years we have seen the closure of one of our local shops and the relocation of the post-office to the other side of the parish. Even our school is experiencing difficulty reflected in our declining enrolment as we struggle to survive. We feel here in the school we have a vital role to ensure that aspects of our heritage are recorded for future generations.
